Health Benefits of Lemons

10/18/2016

Lemons are an amazing little fruit. You may not think about them much because of their sour flavor, but they are packed with vitamin C! In fact, one raw lemon (minus its peel) contains over half of your daily dose of vitamin C! This is why it has been commonly used to treat scurvy, which may make you think of pirates! Aye, matey, them there lemons will cure what ails ya! OK. Enough of the pirate talk for now!
Vitamin C aids in the production of collagen, so eating plenty of it from lemons or other sources can improve your skin texture and tone. The antioxidants in lemon water fight damage from free radicals, which helps keep your skin looking young and keeps wrinkles at bay!

Lemons detox your body

Lemons and lemon water detox your body in a number of ways. Your body is made to remove toxins, and lemons aid in those processes. First, lemons are similar in atomic structure to stomach bile, so it tricks your liver into producing bile. This keeps your digestion moving and helps relieve indigestion. Second, these acids encourage your body to spend more time absorbing the good nutrients in the food you eat. This means better nutrient absorption and less bloating. Third, lemons contain a mild diuretic, which means your body eliminates more waste through urination. All these elements work together to detox your body and your skin.
Lemons also contain a natural fiber called pectin that helps you feel full for longer, which means you won’t feel the need to nosh throughout the day!
