Healthy Shopping Tips

10/27/2016

Do you find yourself wandering the aisles at the grocery store and ending up with more sugary or salty snacks than fresh produce? One mistake could be going shopping when you’re hungry – that is when your willpower is at its lowest. Not only that, but try to do the majority of your shopping around the perimeter of the store.
Try not to shop when you're hungry
The perimeter of the store has the items that more fresh – produce, dairy, meat, and bakery. Of course you still have to think about the things you put in your cart even on the perimeter. Lean, organic meats are a better choice than fatty meats. You also need to make good choices with dairy and dairy substitutes. It’s always a good idea to read the label and know what’s in your food and how much fat, sugar, etc. it contains. Bakery items are the same way. Don’t get sucked in by labeling that says “wheat bread” or “natural”. Read the ingredients and make sure that whole grains are at the top of the list.

Of course, there are a few good things in the middle of the store, such as whole grain pasta, dried beans and rice, or organic broths and soups. The key is in reading the nutritional facts and the ingredient list. Next time you hit the store, try hitting up the perimeter and see how it changes what ends up in your basket! Happy shopping!
